Nikoi is a 15 hectare private island 8km off the east coast of Bintan, Indonesia. Located less than 85km from Singapore, travelling time from Tanah Merah ferry terminal is approximately two and a half hours.
Long regarded as one of the most stunning islands on this relatively unspoilt coast, Nikoi is fortunate to have remained in pristine condition. It is ringed with white sandy beaches and coral reefs of spectacular colour and diversity and a coastline studded with magnificent white granite boulders that seemingly defy gravity. Rising to a height of 30m, the island also boasts a rain forest where colossal trees, including native Banyan trees, provide a sanctuary to a diverse population of local birds.
Handcrafted from driftwood with vernacular ‘alang alang’ grass roofs, the one and two and three bedroom stilted beach houses incorporate spacious upstairs bedrooms, bathrooms and balconies to maximise water views and catch cooling sea breezes.
There are a total of 15 beach houses (10 x one bedroom, 4 x 2 bedroom and 1 x 3 bedroom) with no plans to build any more. On a twin share basis we can comfortably accommodate 42 guests but we often have 50 or more staying as there are an additional 7 bunk rooms in some of the one and two bedroom houses and there are day beds that can be converted to additional beds.
Privacy is guaranteed with all of the accommodation generously spaced out over a 5 hectare site on the western side of the island. The remaining 10 hectares is primary rainforest and being the more environmentally sensitive portion of the island we have preserved it as a sanctuary. There are no other hotels, restaurants or shops on the island, it is truly a private island.
Interiors introduce you to barefoot luxury at its very best. With vaulted ceilings, handmade electric fans and king sized beds resplendent in luxurious white cotton sheets draped with generous mosquito nets. Ensuite master bathrooms include hot water showers and modern fittings set amongst natural stone and wood. Each beach house has an iPod speaker system and a safe. Whilst free of telephones, computers and fax machines there is excellent mobile phone reception on the island should you wish to be contactable. Wifi is also available.
There are two dining rooms on Nikoi, one for families and one for couples or families with older children. Each has a 9m long dining table made from an impressive piece of driftwood. Alternatively guests can opt to dine on the beach, one of our private balconies or in the privacy of their own beach house. And for those seeking total seclusion, picnic hampers can be ordered and taken to your choice of the nearby deserted islands (additional charges may apply). The menu changes daily according to the seasonal availability of ingredients from local markets. The emphasis is on the freshest ingredients prepared simply. Barbequed seafood, local dishes and tropical fruits feature prominently on the menu.
Wellness & Beauty
A tented Spa offers a wide variety of massages, facials, scrubs, pedicures, manicures and even kids massages.
Whilst many people visit Nikoi just to unwind, we do offer a wide range of activities for the more active. The best thing about this is that we do not charge for most of these activities and you are free to use the equipment for as long and as often as you like. Charges will typically apply for more advanced equipment and activities such as diving and rock climbing. Many of our staff are experienced sailors, divers and rock climbers and are always happy to help introduce guests to a new activity.
Rock climbing/mountain biking & trekking There are some exciting trails for walkers or mountain bikers to explore on Bintan and neighbouring islands.
Tennis and Croquet
We have two natural grass tennis courts on Nikoi. We rotate these so one court is in play for tennis and the other set up for Croquet. The nature of a natural grass court is that it cannot be played all the time so please bear with us but we think it is the best surface to play on.
There are plenty of opportunities to explore the island’s flora and fauna. At low tide the rock pools around the reef make a fascinating area to explore for both adults and children. Our staff will be happy to help you identify what you see or even take you on a guided walk pointing out the flora and fauna. We have a team that monitors the beaches for turtle nests and works on marine conservation so do ask to speak to any of these staff if this is something you are interested in. Turtles nest on the island between February and September.
Beach volleyball, Boule, Capture the Flag etc.
A range of games is available upon request. For more active guests, members of staff are always keen for a game of volleyball.
Water sports include swimming, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, windsurfing, stand-up paddle boarding and sailing (we have Lasers and catamarans)). All equipment is provided free of charge, except for the catamarans and advanced level windsurfing boards. Kite surfing is also a popular activity on nearby Bintan. There are tremendous opportunities to snorkel from the various beaches that surround the island.
There are twice daily flights from Jakarta to Bintan on Sriwijaya Air. From the airport on Bintan it is a half-hour car journey to Kawal and then a half-hour boat trip to Nikoi. Regular high speed catamaran ferries operate between Singapore and Bintan Resorts. The service operates at least five times every day and takes less than 1 hour. The Tanah Merah ferry terminal in Singapore is 10 minutes from Changi International Airport. From Singapore’s Tanah Merah ferry terminal it takes approximately two and a half hours to reach Nikoi Island.
